A story of two spin off companies

Fundamental MRSEC research often leads to new technologies that in turn create innovative start-up companies. QD Vision and Luminus Devices are two exciting examples of this process. In both cases, MRSEC-supported research at MIT helped to develop the basic platform for these new technologies.

QD Vision, co-founded by former students in the Bawendi and Bulovic groups, has produced the world's first quantum dot light emitting display and is on track to develop this product for the commercial market. Luminus Devices, co-founded by students who worked on IRG-I research, has patented a photonic lattice technology called PhlatLightâ„’¢, which is the world's first single-chip solid-state lighting source powerful enough to be used in high definition TVs. QD Vision and Luminus Devices have invented technologies that are more environmentally friendly than standard mechanisms. Together, both companies have contributed a total of about 200 jobs to their local economy.
