Symposium Highlights New Research Developments

In October 2005, a "Materials Day at MIT" outreach symposium was held that focused on new research developments from the MIT MRSEC program. This full day symposium, organized by MIT's Materials Processing Center (MPC) and Industrial Liaison Program (ILP), was attended by representatives from a total of 42 different companies. Also in attendance were about 65 members of the MIT community, including faculty, graduate and undergraduate students. The program was entitled "Frontiers in Materials: Interdisciplinary Research in Materials Science and Engineering" and included presentations by the MRSEC director, leaders of the MRSEC interdisciplinary research groups (IRGs) and IRG investigators. At the end of the technical program, a poster session/competition and social was held that included 75 poster presentations from both MRSEC students and post-doctoral associates and group members from the wider MIT materials research community. The poster competition was judged by representatives from companies such as Analog Devices, Novartis, Lockhead-Martin, and Lucent Technologies. Five prizes were awarded to students in recognition of their excellent poster presentations, including three MRSEC supported students. The various participants had an opportunity to interact with a full complement of MRSEC faculty, students and postdoctoral associates during the technical program, at a sponsored lunch event and during the poster session.
