Northwestern University MRSEC Shared Facilities play a central role in education and outreach programs. For example, the Northwestern University Center for Atom Probe Tomography (NUCAPT) recently hosted a two-day workshop to offer hands-on user training in the latest methods in atom probe tomography including materials analysis and visualization tools. NUCAPT also collaborates with local museums such as the Field Museum of Chicago in the atomic characterization of meteorites and lunar dust, which attracted significant attention in the popular media including a feature on the local Chicago PBS television station WTTW. In addition, one of the first atom-probe field-ion microscopes from NUCAPT was included as part of the Northwestern University MRSEC Materials Science Exhibit, which was previously located at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport and currently located at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago.
