Materials Exhibit

In partnership with the Chicago
Museum of Science and Industry, the NU-MRSEC debuted the Materials Science
Exhibit on March 19, 2015, which highlights how materials science enables
understanding, innovation, and design of the materials that shape society. The
exhibit consists of two galleries each featuring three broad classes of
materials: the Ubiquity Gallery features the science and applications of
ceramics, plastics, and metals, while the Frontier Gallery highlights recent
research developments and cutting-edge applications of materials related to
carbon, silicon, and magnets. An interactive component within the exhibit
allows visitors to design their own magnets from elements found in the periodic
table. In 2014, over 1.4 million guests visited the Museum, including more than
340,000 children in school groups.
