Pressure is a variable that plays a key role in a large variety of phenomena that range from large scale effects at the interior of planets to small energy scale properties such as quantum critical behavior and a diversity of exotic phase transitions in, for instance, strongly correlated electron materials. With this kick-off conference we would like to bring together scientists working in this field and to provide a forum for intense discussion and examination of the most advanced aspects of the use of high pressure for the investigation of these phenomena.

From April 5-9, 2027, researchers working in seemingly unrelated fields will gather in Seattle, Washington, to promote, share and discuss issues and developments across disciplines at the 2027 MRS Spring Meeting & Exhibit. Meeting venues include the Summit at the Seattle Convention Center, as well as the Hyatt Regency Seattle.

The 2026 MRS Fall Meeting & Exhibit returns to Boston, Massachusetts, November 29 – December 4, 2026, at the Hynes Convention Center and Sheraton Boston Hotel, bringing together the global materials research community for a week of innovation.

The Rising Stars in Soft and Biological Matter Symposium, co-sponsored by UChicago and the University of California San Diego MRSECs, provides a platform for exceptional early-career soft matter, energy materials, and biological matter scientists to present their work. Symposium participants are selected based on a track record of research accomplishments.

The Center for Advanced Electronic Materials (AEM) at Columbia University unites scientists and engineers from chemistry, physics, and engineering to discover and design quantum materials that move and process information far more efficiently than today's technologies allow.

IRG 1 investigates emergent quantum phenomena in engineered oxide and van der Waals heterostructures, designing ferroic and multiferroic interfaces, engineering topological spin textures and tunable altermagnetic states, and controlling defects and polar phase boundaries.

IRG 1 re-engineers scintillators as nanostructured metamaterials through advances in multiscale modeling, inverse design, and nanofabrication, and is expected to deliver a factor of 10-to-100 enhancement of spatial resolution and a factor of 10 reduction in emission time, enabling improved patient diagnoses with lower radiation doses.

IRG 1 addresses the discovery, synthesis, and control of quantum materials, developing new synthetic routes, including reactions carried out inside nanoscale van der Waals reactors, and using machine learning and autonomous, robotically assisted experimentation to build libraries of flat-band and twisted van der Waals superlattices and screen them for emergent electronic order.
