The National Academy of Sciences Arthur M. Sackler Colloquium will host Nanomaterials in Biology and Medicine: Promises and Perils April 10-11, 2007 in Washington, D.C. The colloquium will be structured to include researchers, postdoctoral fellows, directors of public granting agencies, and policy makers considering the societal and ethical outcomes of recent nanomaterials development.

This workshop will introduce teachers to the materials aspect of archaeology and make them more familiar with the various types of materials encountered in this field and their analysis. Lectures in Archaeochemistry, Archeometallurgy, Archeological Ceramics, and Bronze Casting Technology, will be followed by a tour of LRSM's shared experimental facilities. After lunch at the LRSM, there will be a tour of the Museum Ceramics Lab. and a visit to a local bronze casting foundry to observe the complete process in making a lost wax bronze sculpture.

This Symposium in honor of Eric Mazur aims to bring together a diverse collection of scientists and educators whose career paths have intersected with Eric’s and who share the passion Eric has for science, education and innovation. On the scientific side, the shared focus is the use of light to elucidate complex phenomena in materials while emphasizing the intuitive approach that has often characterized Eric’s contributions to the field.
