Sometimes, the most interesting discussions occur over a beer or a glass of your favorite vino. (Bonus points if you can remember what was said the next morning!) That’s the concept behind Suds & Science, a monthly event that brings scientists face-to-face with the general public in a neighborhood bar. Each session kicks off with a short and enlightening presentation, after which the floor is open for discussion between the audience and the speaker. We cover a wide variety of topics that can range from the science of beer to superhero physics to the genius of genomes.

The findings and recommendations of the MRSEC's Education and Outreach activities noted in the National Academy of Sciences Report, "Looking Back, Moving Forward" reveal both areas of strength and areas that can be improved.

The Materials Research Facilities Network (MRFN), with support and encouragement from the NSF MRSEC Program Officers at National Science Foundation, is organizing a 1.5 day workshop to bring together managers of shared multi-user facilities to discuss the efficient operation and evolution of shared facilities and to share unique solutions that individual MRSECs have developed. This workshop will cover different aspects of the bottom-up design of electronic materials from assemblies of metal and semiconductor nanocrystals, drawing on existing expertise in organic and disordered conductors. These nanocrystalline solids combine unusual optical, electronic, magnetic and themla properties. Potential applications include photodetectors, LED, solar-cells, thermoelectric and printable electronics.
