The FUSE program has provided research opportunities in the field of materials science to 36 first year students at UT Austin. FUSE students perform ~7-8 hours/week of laboratory work in CDCM labs, receive intentional mentoring from faculty, learn basic research techniques, hone their oral and written communication skills, and join a community of supportive researchers. Deliverables include submitting a poster and abstract each semester and proctoring a poster during the Spring and Fall poster sessions. Nineteen of the twenty-four FUSE alumni have opted to continue research in their labs and 12 were placed as peer mentors supporting the newer FUSE cohorts. On the end of program surveys, 100% of students indicated they would like to continue research as an undergrad, are more confident conducting research, and are more likely to pursue a graduate degree. Three FUSE students have co-authored publications and five have presented their research at conferences outside of UT. Our first alum has recently graduated and been accepted into the MIT Electrical Engineering Graduate program. He was also awarded a prestigious NSF GRFP award.
