The Materials Research Society (MRS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are sponsoring a special program to allow a select group of high school teachers from around the nation to learn about and participate in materials research and its role in our schools and in our society. The organizers of the 2004 Materials Research Society (MRS) Fall Meeting in Boston are encouraging high school teachers who have had collaborations with universities to attend symposium PP entitled: Communicating Materials Science - Education for the 21st Century. Interested teachers are required to have a faculty mentor/contact who will be attending the MRS meeting and act as a resource for the teacher, before, during and after the meeting. On its Tenth Anniversary: The Broader Impact of the NSF MRSEC Program - Moving Materials into the Future The NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) Program will celebrate its Tenth Anniversary at the 2004 MRS Fall Meeting on Tuesday evening, November 30, 2004.
The event will begin at 7:00 PM, with presentations by Dr. W. Lance Haworth, Executive Officer of the National Science Foundation Division of Materials Research, and Prof. Alan G. MacDiarmid of the University of Pennsylvania, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Each will speak on the value of interdisciplinary materials research, which is the central theme of the MRSEC program. Dr. Haworth will talk on "The NSF Materials Science and Engineering Centers: What Have They Done for Us Lately? Pre-history, Profile and Prognosis." Prof. MacDiarmid will then present "Electronic Organic Polymers: An Example of Interdisciplinary Research."
The celebration will continue at 8:00 PM with a reception, which will include refreshments and poster presentations from NSF and the 28 current MRSEC Centers.
All are invited to this event, to be held in Room 210 in the Hynes Convention Center.
