Shared Experimental Facilities Benefit University of Puerto Rico Students

State-of-the-art electron microscopy often requires a multimillion dollar investment in equipment and special low vibration buildings, as well as continuing support from skilled facility managers who train students and maintain the equipment. Once the investment is made, as many researchers as possible should have access to the equipment.<br />
Researchers at Cornell University in upstate New York and the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) have entered into a partnership to make equipment at Cornell available to students from both universities. Before arriving at Cornell, UPR researchers consult with Cornell facility managers and reserve time on the equipment. Upon arrival, the visitors are trained, and then given full access to the facilities. In the last 6 months, 9 UPR graduate students and postdocs have traveled to Cornell and spent approximately 200 hours working in the Shared Experimental Facilities. Thanks to special short-term housing offered by Cornell, the cost of the entire trip is affordable, providing the students from UPR an excellent opportunity to use the advanced equipment set offered by CCMR.

Cornell’s Facilities 101

Cornell’s Facilities 101 on April 8, 2008 attracted 16 participants from 11 organizations.

Each spring, the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) invites participants from regional businesses to a 1-day “Facilities 101” workshop comprising classroom presentations, lab tours, and demonstrations. Attendees learn how the experienced staff and extensive instrumentation of the CCMR Shared Experimental Facilities can help solve problems and support in-house R&D efforts. This event is one element of an Industrial Partnerships program that has helped to expand external use of CCMR facilities over the past 3 years.

Workshop in the X-ray Diffraction lab / PANalytical

PANaltyical X’Pert ProThe MIT Center for Materials Science and Engineering shared experimental facilities offer equipment workshops on a regular basis that are jointly sponsored by the MIT MRSEC and industry, and attended by individuals from the local R&D community.

Recent examples of these sorts of interactions include: a workshop in the X-ray Diffraction lab, co-sponsored by PANalytical; and a seminar on confocal technology for metrology applications, co-sponsored by Olympus Industrial America.
