“The Present and Future of Spintronics”

by
Professor Albert Fert
Winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics

Friday, March 7, 2008
227 Gallalee Hall
1:30 pm

Professor Fert was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in
2007 for the discovery (with Peter Gruenberg) of the
phenomenon of Giant Magnetoresistance in 1988. This
discovery is generally recognized as the birth of the new field
of spin electronics or spintronics. Spintronics attempts to
use the spin of the electron as well as its charge to
manipulate electrons in devices. Professor Fert’s talk will
begin with an introduction to the fundamentals of spin
dependent electronic conduction. It will then briefly cover
Giant Magnetoresistance. Most of the talk will be devoted
to recent developments in spintronics.
