The Center for Response Driven Polymeric Films offers a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. The application process consists of the attached application form, transcripts from your undergraduate institution, and two official letters of recommendation from appropriate individuals. All application materials are due March 7, 2008. Completed photocopies of the application and recommendation forms are acceptable. Rising sophomores and juniors will be considered as long as they have completed at least General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. Special consideration will be given to those applicants who have completed chemistry coursework at an advanced level.

REU students will participate in a ten week session of education and research (May 27 thru August 1, 2008) with a faculty member involved in MRSEC Research. Students will receive a stipend of $4,500 for their summer research with an additional allocation for university housing and limited support to supplement travel costs to Hattiesburg. Funds are also available to assist with transportation costs of the participants to present the results of their research at a state, regional or national scientific meeting. Participants will arrive in Hattiesburg on Monday, May 27 and depart August 1, 2008. All participants must stay through August 3rd to enjoy the end-of-summer presentations and reception.

The REU program gathers students from across the country. The primary activity is interdisciplinary research on stimuli-responsive polymeric materials with faculty and graduate students in state-of-the-art laboratories. Additionally, students participate in seminars from invited academic and industrial scientists, instruction in fundamental of polymer science, and professional development workshops. Students have the opportunity to learn and perform research using our state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation. Team building and socials activities range from a ropes course to beach activities. Field trips to local polymer and chemical facilities, NASA labs, and marine research facilities are offered.
