Chicago Materials Research Center @ University of Chicago
The Chicago Materials Research Center addresses fundamental scientific problems of technological significance which require an approach that transcends traditional disciplines.
Our Center focuses on two overarching, intertwined issues: the manipulation of structural properties connected through hierarchies of length scales, and the feedback between structural properties and dynamical response. The understanding and control of these issues provides a foundation for the design of next generation functional materials, from cooperative quantum spin systems and self-assembled nanostructures to microfluidic systems and bio-inorganic hybrid materials.
We use a comprehensive approach that exploits similarities in the behavior of seemingly different classes of materials, explores the full spectrum of relevant length scales, and develops broadly applicable concepts of predictive power. It also builds on Chicago’s history of interdisciplinary research and on our innovations of completely new frameworks for addressing materials problems in regimes that have resisted the standard approaches of physics or chemistry.
